Summer Heat Solar Performance

A common misconception about solar panel performance is that the hotter the temperature is, the better your solar performance will be. However, that is not always the case! Solar panel performance relies first and foremost on available sunlight, and heat can limit solar performance. To learn more about how seasonal changes affect your solar performance, read our blog below!

Summer Solar Performance

The heat isn’t what makes your solar panels produce more energy during the summer months. In fact, it’s the longer daylight hours that boost solar production.

Hot temperatures are actually detrimental to solar energy efficiency as they limit the reaction between the photons and electrons that leads to the production of electricity. Heat agitates the molecules in your solar panels to the point that it affects their ability to convert energy from the sun’s rays. However, due to the extended amount of daylight hours solar panels receive in the summer, the panels still can produce electricity to help power your home.

Peak Solar Performance Seasons

The best times of year for solar performance are when sunlight is most available. Those are typically in the spring, summer and fall months. On milder days, your solar panel efficiency can be at its peak, but on hot days, it can drop. Every season has its pros and cons.

These seasons are the best times of year to enjoy the benefits of your battery backup or take advantage of net metering. If your solar panels produce more electricity than you need at any one time, you might be able to sell it back to the grid for credits on your next electricity bill. That way, if there’s a time where your solar panels are producing less electricity than what you need, you still can enjoy the energy produced by our solar system.

A Generac battery backup also can be useful during peak solar performance seasons, as you can store extra energy in a backup that will fill the gaps when your solar panels aren’t producing energy or in case of a power outage.
